SWOOPIN’D BBQ CONTEST: WHEN THE COMMUNITY SHOWED UP
On June 28, 2026, Swoopin’D reached a milestone that meant a lot more to us than simply hosting another event.
The inaugural Swoopin’D BBQ Contest was our first official charitable event as a recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
For years, Swoopin’D has been about bringing Chargers fans together. Tailgating, friendships, good food, good music and the community that comes with being part of the Bolts family have always been at the heart of who we are. Becoming an official nonprofit gave us an opportunity to take that same energy and use it in a more organized way to support our community.
The BBQ Contest was our first chance to put that mission into action.
If You Build It, Will They Come?
There was a lot of work that went on behind the scenes before the first plate of BBQ was ever served.
We spent months planning the competition, lining up sponsors and partners, coordinating vendors, organizing volunteers, working through event logistics and making sure all the little details were in place.
But there was one thing we couldn't plan.
Would people actually show up?
You can build an event, promote it and prepare for every possibility, but until people start walking through the gate, you really don't know.
Seeing the crowd begin to arrive was one of the best feelings of the entire experience.
By the end of the day, approximately 150 people had joined us for an afternoon of BBQ, music, competition and, most importantly, giving back. It was one of those true "if you build it, they will come" moments for us.
And the Chargers community came.
BBQ With a Purpose
The event was free to attend, making it easy for friends, families and Chargers fans to come out and enjoy the day. Guests could purchase tasting tickets to sample BBQ from the competing teams and cast their vote for the People's Choice Award.
Teams went head-to-head in Tri-Tip and Wings, giving everyone plenty to argue about when it came time to decide who had brought their best to the pit.
When the smoke cleared, BBQ Mad Doggs took home the Tri-Tip championship, BoltVox Pitmasters won the Wings competition, and Fricken Chicken earned the crowd's vote as the People's Choice winner.
The competition was fun and bragging rights were definitely on the line, but from the beginning, the event had a much bigger purpose.
Every dollar of profit from the BBQ Contest went toward purchasing backpacks for local kids.
None of the profits were used to cover Swoopin’D tailgate operating expenses.
Because of the support we received that day, the inaugural Swoopin’D BBQ Contest helped fund 384 new backpacks for local children through the Aztlán Youth Brigade's back-to-school effort.
That is the number we are most proud of.
384 backpacks.
384 opportunities to send a kid into the school year with something new on their back and a little more confidence walking through the classroom door.
Our Chargers Community Answered the Call
For Swoopin’D President Sam Constancio, the biggest takeaway from the event wasn't the competition or even seeing months of planning finally come together.
It was seeing the Chargers community respond.
"What meant the most to me was seeing how our Chargers community stepped up to support the cause. We're a community that believes in giving back, and when we made the call, people showed up."
That spirit is exactly what Swoopin’D hopes to build on as a nonprofit.
Football may be what originally brought many of us together, but what we can accomplish together goes well beyond what happens on Sundays.
It Took a Community
An event like this doesn't happen because of one organization.
WOO! Studios played a major role in making the day possible by donating the use of their overflow lot and giving us a home for the inaugural competition.
The Deck at Moonshine Flats supported the event as a $500 Supporting Sponsor and has continued to be a valued supporter of Swoopin’D and the Chargers community.
Tequila 512 supplied tequila for our bar, provided an Arctic cooler and tequila bottles for People's Choice prizes, and also provided one of our BBQ competition judges.
El Jefe joined us at the event to hand out energy drinks to attendees and provided another BBQ competition judge.
Reddy Ice donated 36 bags of ice, an essential contribution to keeping everything cold and the event running throughout the day.
Tailgreeter and the Blue Thunder Bombers each stepped up as Community Level Sponsors and helped support the mission behind the event.
A Force of Nature Alkaline Water provided bottled water to help keep everyone hydrated throughout the day.
We are incredibly thankful for every business and organization that believed in what we were trying to accomplish.
We also want to thank all of the BBQ teams, volunteers, vendors, DJs, musicians, event staff and everyone who donated their time, talents and energy to make the day happen. Every person played a part.
And, of course, thank you to every Chargers fan, friend, family member and community supporter who walked through the gate, bought tasting tickets, tried some BBQ and helped turn an idea into 384 backpacks for kids.
Just the Beginning
The backpack effort didn't stop when the BBQ pits cooled down. Our community continued supporting the back-to-school drive at our annual Tailgate at the Bay, carrying the momentum from the BBQ Contest forward.
We'll share more about that event and its impact in another story.
For now, the inaugural Swoopin’D BBQ Contest will always hold a special place in our history.
It was our first official charitable event as a 501(c)(3).
It was our first opportunity to show what Swoopin’D could become.
And our community showed us that when Chargers fans come together around a good cause, we can make a real difference.
We hope the Swoopin’D BBQ Contest becomes an annual tradition, and this is only the beginning of what we want to accomplish.
Come join us at a future event, support the mission, partner with us, or simply help spread the word.
Together, we can keep the good times going and turn them into something even bigger.
